WARREN BUFFETT & CHARLIE MUNGER

WARREN BUFFETT & CHARLIE MUNGER
Notes from the Berkshire Hathaway AGM

We attended the Annual General Meeting (‘AGM’) for Berkshire Hathaway, which is the company started by Warren Buffett, one of the richest men in the world. I’ve attached a summary of notes which outlines some of their investment strategies that have helped them growth and sustain their wealth base.

Obviously their riches are far beyond most people, BUT importantly, their strategies can be applied by you and I. That’s the brilliant thing about good investment strategies, they are almost always scalable and the wealth principles can be applied by ordinary people.

Sincere regards

JK Rowling and Her Extraordinary Life With Harry Potter

Message from Sean Conway, The Millionaire's Plan:

J.K. Rowling is surely one of the most inspiration people we know. From broke to billionaire through writing a book in a cafe with a baby at her side in a pram! She clearly identified her unique talent, had an enormous self-belief and persisted with her manuscript until someone said 'yes!'

If you dont know, it took something like 10 or 11 publishers to review the manuscript, before one finally said yes.

I've put this article in for you to read, firstly because it is such an inspiring story, and secondly, to remind you that amazing things can be done by ordinary people who have an idea and self-belief.

Warm regards

J.K. Rowling and her extraordinary life with Harry Potter

"J.K. Rowling has been ranked as #40 on Forbes' list of the 100 most powerful women in the world. She is the first author in history to be worth $1 billion, and is only one of five women who are self-made billionaires. She has accomplished the nearly unthinkable for a modern writer: she has achieved overwhelming critical and financial success in her own lifetime. Forbes classifies her as a 'media dynamo,' which from all accounts is somewhat amazing to the modest British girl whose greatest dream was to see one of her books for sale in a bookshop and -- if fortune smiled upon her -- to have a positive book review in a national newspaper.

Forbes says:
'Her Harry Potter books have sold a stunning 270 million copies in 62 languages worldwide. Her sixth installment of the Harry Potter blockbuster series, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, sold a breathtaking 6.9 million copies in its first 24 hours of release and is the largest-ever product debut on Amazon.com. Generating more than $100 million in revenue, her new book's debut is not only the richest opening in publishing history but also gave heart palpitations to the makers of the movie Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which debuted the same weekend as the new book. This seven-year phenomenon is not letting up anytime soon, though Rowling has said the seventh installment will be her last. Harry Potter movies, with their antic capers of magic and wizardry at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, have grossed an impressive $2.5 billion to date, including DVDs.' 1 "

Oprah Winfrey: Wealth Is 'A Good Thing'

Comment from Sean Conway, The Millionaire’s Plan:

Oprah Winfrey is an extraordinary woman who overcame an under-priveleged childhood to grow to be one of the world’s richest women.

This brief article below highlights that she believes making money and being rich is a good thing and that she has no values clash with being rich.

The telling comment, and something we can all learn from is when she says..
“I do not know how me being destitute is going to help them.”

She feels having money enables her to contribute to benevolent projects all over the world. If she wasn’t wealthy, if she didn’t have a large cash flow, she could do this.

Read below for more.

Oprah Winfrey: Wealth Is 'A Good Thing'
TUESDAY APRIL 11, 2006
By Stephen M. Silverman with Susan Mandel

Oprah Winfrey is a rich woman – and she's got no problem with that.

Speaking in Baltimore on Monday at a fundraiser for Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School, Winfrey told the audience, "I have lots of things, like all these Manolo Blahniks. I have all that and I think it's great. I'm not one of those people like, 'Well, we must renounce ourselves.' No, I have a closet full of shoes and it's a good thing."

Winfrey, 52, who is reportedly worth more than $1 billion, said she doesn't feel guilty about her wealth. "I was coming back from Africa on one of my trips," she said. "I had taken one of my wealthy friends with me. She said, 'Don't you just feel guilty? Don't you just feel terrible?' I said, 'No, I don't. I do not know how me being destitute is going to help them.' Then I said when we got home, 'I'm going home to sleep on my Pratesi sheets right now and I'll feel good about it.' "

Entrepreneur shares strategy for success.

Message fromn Sean Conway, The Millionaires Plan:

This article in our current series on entrepreneurs, reinforces the fact that many successful entrepreneurs start small, with nothing and often in the garage of their home!

The more you can read about entrepreneurs, how they made their idea work to the point of a highly valued company, the more you will learn and can apply to your own business ideas.

An excerpt for the article appears below. You can access the full article by clicking here.

Entrepreneur shares strategy for success
BY JUDY NEWMAN

TUE OCT 31, 2006

"First of all, you have to find yourself a garage."

It was with a touch of humor that Manny Villafana - founder of a Minnesota company that developed one of the most widely used heart-valve implants - shared his secrets for entrepreneurial success with a conference at Monona Terrace on Monday.

A Puerto Rican who grew up in the South Bronx, Villafana has started several successful medical device companies in Minnesota. One of them, St. Jude Medical of St. Paul, makes mechanical heart valves, implantable defibrillators and pacemakers. It had $2.9 billion in sales last year and 10,000 employees.

Focus on your goal and be prepared to spend a lot of time with "hat in hand," Villafana told the symposium's luncheon gathering. "You're going to get slapped quite a few times, asking for money, but you might also get kissed," he said.

Circling in on lifestyle target

Message From Sean Conway, The Millionaires Plan:

Here's another example of two entrepreneurs who started with nothing and have built a successful company.

I like the way they brainstormed, set themselves some targets and then stayed faithful to their business plan - even though the founders had to go get regular jobs before they started their business together.

Obviously they had a target of making money, wanting to work from home initially, wanting financial independence and they also wanted to see whether they could do it. Self-challenge is a good thing!

I like also like their 'winning advice' -

“So, with all they have been through, what is their winning advice for other entrepreneurs?

“Find your champions,” Sherbrooke says. “Maintaining your confidence in your ability to get it done is 90 percent of the battle.”

“Building on that, network,” Kraus advises. “Every woman entrepreneur should think that the world is small instead of thinking that it is so big.”

Circling in on lifestyle target

BostonHerald.com - Women's Business: Circling in on lifestyle target:

"Forget circuitous — Circles founders Janet Kraus and Kathy Sherbrooke have graphed a straight trajectory up the success chart. Starting out in Kraus’ extra bedroom in 1997, they’ve grown the lifestyle services company to almost $45 million in revenue and 600 employees in two locations.

Kraus, as CEO, and Sherbrooke, as president, did it not by starting out with a product but on the strength of their shared values, personal synergy and common vision for a company’s structure and contribution.

Once they hit on the time-starved professional as their target, they then began the trial-and-error process of trailblazing a new, untried but immediately welcomed concept in lifestyle support at the Fortune 500 level."

So, with all they have been through, what is their winning advice for other entrepreneurs?

“Find your champions,” Sherbrooke says. “Maintaining your confidence in your ability to get it done is 90 percent of the battle.”

“Building on that, network,” Kraus advises. “Every woman entrepreneur should think that the world is small instead of thinking that it is so big.”
